Lyrics

We Got Rain 1. Louisian folks are tougher than a hurricane, in Florida the sun shines on your brain I hate to tell you this, it goes against my grain but in Oregon we got rain 2. Vermont's got maple syrup drippin' from a tree, They pick country music in Nashville Tennessee Well, here you'd better check your chair before you set 'cause in Oregon we got wet 3. Montana's real pretty got a great big sky, don't look up here you'll get water in your eye If you want to know the many ways that we are blessed, let me just give you our short list Chorus... We got rain in the mornin' rain in the evenin' rain most all the time I'm so wet my bones are rusted from this liquid sunshine! 4. The Las Vegas sky's full of neon light, in Alaska the sun stays up all night There's interesting places all over the map, in Oregon we got damp 5. You've all heard about a Georgia peach, and California girls layin' on the beach Here we're just hopin' it all don't go down the drain, In Oregon we got rain (Chorus) 6. Down in Texas they say everything is big, in Idaho they got potatoes to dig Minnesota's got a lot of lakes they insist, in Oregon we got mist Chorus 2... We got fog in the mornin' drizzle in the evenin' showers most all the time My silver lining's come undone, it's liquid sunshine! 7. They're eatin' buttered lobster out in Main, Hawaii's proud of that sugar cane I won't beat around the bush, I'll have to tell you plain In Oregon we got rain, In Oregon we got rain In Oregon we got rain

Story

"This Town"... This song grew from observations on Salem Oregon and ended up taking on "Anytown" U.S.A. Sometimes I feel like with every modernization and technological advance we loose a chunk of our souls.

Lyrics

This Town This town is filled with tattoo and pizza parlors Fancy boutique hair salons where there use to be a barber They got drive through divorce but convenience ain't cheap People climb the ladder of success to stand on this big junk heap What rises to the top is not always the cream Sometimes it's just the guy who don't mind steppin' on a dream There's a weight loss clinic located right next door to Chuck E Cheese You know the average age has lowered on the obesity disease There's country clubs and brew pubs, speed dating singles bars And Goth kids on skateboards who look like they're from Mars The schools are overcrowded outmanned and understaffed Every man for himself, we're goin' down, man the life rafts We got waitresses in the ally suckin' on cigarettes, shootin the breeze Every Sunday the horn rimmed, born again are down upon their knees On the outskirts new subdivisions are always on the rise Reflected in the shrinking, fading, aging farmers eyes The economy is teetering and Daddy's in distress Get out the credit card, life is hard princess needs a prom dress We got fast food joints and coffee shops, karaoke Tuesday night Topless bars and muscle cars waiting for the light The bookstore and record shop are empty as my wallet They fall for the strip mall, progress is what they call it We bulldoze memories for the impermanent and new Change ain't lookin' for a friend, it's the tune we dance to The housing association wants you to clearly understand There's nothing quite as beautiful as beige and tan and bland In the land where you can grow up to be anything you want to be For six figures you must hide our ugly individuality So when your pride's itchin' like a bad mosquito bite Keep your nose clean and your mouth shut, kid you'll be alright

Story

"West Of Idaho"... Wanting to leave a small town and see the world is a pretty universal feeling I think. My parents bought me a backpack for a present and at 5:00 a.m. the day after high school graduation they drove me to Interstate 5 and I hitchhiked away.

Lyrics

West of Idaho 1. When it's dark enough to see the stars, I'm going to pack it up and light out of this Sleepy little town, on a narrow minded street, most of it's a one-way drag When I finally put my foot down, it's peddle to the metal I ain't lookin' in the rearview back When the sun comes up and the coffee's made, Mama's going to have a heart attack 2. These dreams keep comin' like Oregon rain, steady and they won't let up on me A rounder from this square little town, never found a place I fit in But there's a whole lot of world beyond that blinkin' light at the edge of town When the dust settles on that four way stop, I ain't ever going to turn around Refrain... Mama says it's a pipe dream, Daddy says you'll come home, With your tail between your legs boy, when the prodigal's bankbook is blown They were born and they'll die here, This dirt farm is their whole dream But mine's to aim this beat up Buick at all the places I ain't seen 3. Down in the hollow and up on the hill, everybody's all sayin' they've had their fill Of me and my plans, so I'll see if I can give their ears a good long rest When I'm singin' to the radio, somewhere out in Idaho They won't have to sing along Sure as water is wet and fire will burn, tomorrow I'll be long gone

Story

"If The Castle Burns"... This was written for my wife Michele. These words or any others would be inadequate. She really is the only one that showed me what it really means.

Lyrics

If The Castle Burns 1. It was the scent of moonlit flowers that guided my way Down the path to the door of the one for whom I care And the incense hanging there will forever linger in her hair As we open our eyes to the morning's glare 2. It's coffee with her Sunday as the sun comes up And shines like silver, on the rainy streets I've been with beggars and ate buckwheat Been served meals for kings complete But I've never tasted love that was so sweet Chorus... Wherever my weary boots should ramble 'round To her heart I pledge my return For if the castle burns there in the shambles will be found A fair maid's love a pauper never had earned 3. She'll never look away from the abandoned child The Wild Rose with her Love lies bleeding too And if her eye should gaze on you In green spring or November's hue She'll show you grace, gentle, warm and true 4. She takes me by the hand and leads me through the crowd To a place where I don't have to feel like some antique And there ain't no hide and seek When I touch her silky cheek And we say it all and never have to speak (Chorus) 5. I can hear her softly whisper to me now Goodnight my love, and sweet dreams Since a kid, I've heard it seems Tales of the true heart Jacks and Queens But she's the only one, told me what it really means (Chorus)

Story

"Sweet Short Song"... A song of lost love to all the "ones that got away".

Lyrics

Sweet Short Song 1. I had a dream left me dazed and confused A pretty little bird told me I could fly She said "It ain't the fall that kills you but that sudden stop'll bruise That's the gravity of the situation in the sky" 2. She said "You're free as a bird don't let your chin droop" I heard a little whistle and looked away Just that quick she flew the coop And I've been singin' this song ever since that day Chorus... Where'd you fly off to? Where are you perched? It's a great big empty sky I have searched I sure love your sweet short song Are we birds of a feather or was I wrong:? Are we birds of a feather or was I wrong:? 3. I started thinkin' I should wear a parachute 'Cause the sky might fall and my dream fail And other little birds that I thought were cute Tried to clip my wings and put salt on my tail (Chorus) 4. Would it surprise you if I confessed? Mine was never a free flight plan I was looking for a little bird to feather a nest On a branch in the sun where we both could land (Chorus X 2)

Johnny Cash (New Lyrics By Sig Paulson)

Story

"Five Bucks High And Risin'"... Based on Johnny Cash's song Five Feet High and Risin', I made up some new verses about the great gas gauging of 2008. It started out as "$3.49 and Risin'" but prices on the freeway later topped $5.00. I hated to see it go so high, but it made the song easier to sing.

Lyrics

Five Bucks High And Risin' How high's the gasoline, mama? Two bucks high and risin' How high's the gasoline, papa? Two Bucks high and risin' We can make it down the road on a beat up bike Or an old hay burner 'cause it looks like The price per barrel's really takin' a spike Two bucks high and risin' How high's the gasoline, mama? Three bucks high and risin' How high's the gasoline, papa? Three bucks high and risin' Well, my pay check's gone, And I'm down on my knees I've borrowed every penny that my friends could squeeze Can I open up another credit card please Three bucks high and risin' How high's the gasoline, mama? Four bucks high and risin' How high's the gasoline, papa? Four bucks high and risin' Well, the politician said in his last campaign It's to expensive to build them commuter trains You'll have to squeeze fuel out of corn and grain Four bucks high and risin' How high's the gasoline, mama? Five bucks high and risin' How high's the gasoline, papa? Five bucks high and risin' Well, my tank's just as empty as my pockets are I got a suit for the oil man of feather and tar We'll drive him out of town in an electric car Five bucks high and risin' Well, it's Five bucks high and risin'

Story

"Your Heaven"... To all religious solicitors and prognosticators... God and I made a deal a long time ago. I'll do the best I can and he'll forgive me when I screw up. So if he's got a place for you where I can't get in, he must have known I wouldn't enjoy myself there anyway.

Lyrics

Your Heaven 1. I woke up in the station, heard the train whistle whine Bleary eyed and blinkin' in the cold light of day Station master said, "I believe they left you behind" I said I don't know where I'm headed, I guess I really don't mind 2. He said "You're goin' nowhere boy and getting' there fast" "Imagine that I said, I'm in the same place as you" He said "But my reward's in heaven, and my bags are packed" But that train's for the chosen, so don't even ask Chorus... Oh hell I guess your heaven, and mine ain't the same You've got a fence around yours, mine's an open range Oh hell I guess your heaven ain't the place for me There ain't a lock on mine, but somehow... you think you've got the key 3. Well, I ain't afraid of dyin', it's a natural fact But I'm kind of scared you think it's up for you to decide My final destination, or if my train's on track 'Cause where we're all headed I don't think we can know it exact Chorus... You can have your heaven; I won't be takin' that line It sounds a little stuffy, there's a party in mine Oh hell I guess your heaven ain't the place for me There ain't a lock on mine, but somehow... you think you've got the key Chorus... You got a strange salvation needs an engraved invitation, I'll pass I can only hope that mine might have a little more class Oh hell I guess your heaven ain't the place for me There ain't a lock on mine, but somehow... you think you've got the key There ain't a lock on mine, but somehow... you think you've got the key

Story

"Comin' Apart At The Seams"... This song is about those times when you get in the car and spill coffee on yourself while you look for your lost keys and notice you have two different colored sox on and your underwear is backwards. (If you wear underwear)

Lyrics

Comin' Apart At The Seams 1. Thought it was all sewed up but it's comin' apart at the seams This raggedy coat, that used to be my hopes and dreams My mouth is writin' checks, my ass can't cash Bill collector's on me like a bad, bad rash Thought it was all sewed up but it's comin' apart at the seams 2. I'm tryin' to juggle it all but there's a little too much on my plate The mornin' comes early but I'm a dollar and one day late So poor I can't pay attention, I've lost my self respect I'd take a good look in the mirror but I hate to reflect I'm tryin' to juggle it all but there's a little too much on my plate 3. Tryin' to keep it 'tween the ditches Then I cross that double yellow line Runnin' 'round in circles, seems I always miss the obvious signs Can't keep my feet on the ground, I'm out of my mind I'll be back in five minutes, drivin' blind Tryin' to keep it 'tween the ditches Then I cross that double yellow line

Lyrics

'Til God Comes Down 1. He kicked off his campaign in a one horse town, two miles east of Jesus Talkin' out of both sides of his mouth, he'll say anything to please us And he'd sell his Mother on the street if he thought that it would fly There must be a school where they teach these fools to cover up and lie 2. The news is red with blood 'til I turned white now I'm so blue This circus has no elephant or donkey I can turn to You can bet your boots they're in cahoots, to squeeze the little guy 'Cause when the crooks get their kicks in politics, they'll be bleedin' us all dry Chorus... Why do we hang the petty thieves and elect the great ones? Trust them with our lives and all the horses and the guns? 3. He says my country right or wrong and he's a Christian man But wrong is wrong you can't make it right, no church or preacher can That boat won't float and I can't vote, for the hatred they promote Not 'til God comes down shakin' hands in town, and chances are remote (Solo) 4. If elected he says we'll be protected from those things that we must fear Terrorists and hurricanes and things we should not see or hear Now he's listenin' in on my telephone, but he can't hear the people scream Katrina's beaten hell out of us, down in New Orleans Chorus... Why do we hang the petty thieves and elect the great ones? Trust them with our lives and all the horses and the guns? 5. The lobbyists are peddling influence on the hill At thousand dollar dinners the candidates are dressed to kill Now my mailbox is blocked from all those campaign leaflets that they send I'm under attack, I want my freedom back, who's gonna protect me from them I'm under attack, I want my freedom back, who's gonna protect me from them

Story

"Surrender"... This is the old Cheap Trick song. A friend asked me to join a band playing classic rock hits country style. We called it the Malaprop Zion Orchestra. It was very short lived but for some reason this song stuck with me and I've played it ever since.

Lyrics

Surrender 1. Mama told me, yes, she told me I'd meet girls like you. She also told me, "Stay away, you never know what you'll catch." Just the other day I heard of a soldier's falling off Some Indonesian junk that's going round. Chorus... Mommy's alright, Daddy's alright, they just seem a little weird. Surrender, surrender, but don't give yourself away, ay, ay, ay. 2. Daddy said, "Your momma's right, she's really up on things." "Before we married, Momma served with the WACS in the Philippines." Now, I had heard the WACS recruited old maids for the war. But momma isn't one of them, I've known her all these years. Chorus... Mommy's alright, Daddy's alright, they just seem a little weird. Surrender, surrender, but don't give yourself away, ay, ay, ay. (Solo) Chorus... Mommy's alright, Daddy's alright, they just seem a little weird. Surrender, surrender, but don't give yourself away, ay, ay, ay. 3. Whatever happened to all this season's losers of the year? Ev'ry time I got to thinking, where'd they disappear? When I woke up, Mom and Dad are rolling on the couch. Rock and rolling, Rolling numbers got my Kiss records out. Chorus... Mommy's alright, Daddy's alright, they just seem a little weird. Surrender, surrender, but don't give yourself away, ay, ay, ay. Away---------------------- Away---------------------- Away---------------------- Away----------------------

Story

"Late Bloomer"... Every year I get the little Zen desk calendar because it keeps me thinking. I stick the pages I really like on a corkboard so I don't forget them. I fashioned this song by starting each verse with a line from some of my favorites, then I stuck in my own thoughts to glue them together.

Lyrics

Late Bloomer 1. Eternity's a scary thought, where's it going to end? Standin' by the road with the baggage I bought, now I've damn few friends To help me take it down the line So I'm thinkin' about leavin' it all behind, for someone else to find I'll let the four winds blow me around That way I'll be heaven bound someday 2. When elephants fight, they say it's the grass that suffers It rained on my parade last night, but I will recover 'Cuse trouble disappears like dew, When the morning sun shines through, and I'm with you Like the beauty that returns in spring I'll come back as a funky king someday Chorus... It ain't always the first horse out the gate Standin' with the roses in the sun A flower's no less beautiful blooming late And who can tell the seasons when they're done? 3. A flower falls though you love it, a weed grows though you don't I can wear your love like an old jacket, Keep me from the rain it won't Oh but it'll keep me warm inside, as through this windy world I ride You help me take it in stride We can't change the world I guess But we just might find happiness someday (Chorus) 4. Behind every jewel there's three thousand sweating horses Shooting for the moon, pooling their resources I've been shining my stuff, but I'm still just a diamond in the rough, not quite shiny enough Some facets are unclear but I'll hang a beautiful chandelier someday (Solo) Eternity's a scary thought, where's it going to end...

Story

"Picture In A Box"... I lived most of my life not having to deal with the loss of anyone close to me. I knew the hammer would drop one day. I lost my Mother and one of my brothers within six months of each other. I also lost three brothers-in-law to lung cancer. Just prior to all that, one of my close running mates from my old blues band days died. This song is for anybody who's lost someone close to them.

Lyrics

Picture In a Box 1. You were full of hope like a flower in spring So if I never gave you anything If I were not water and I was not sun Pray to God, I was no damage done 2. Now the bottle's empty and the glass is too And I'm gone for travelin' someplace new Please think of me like whiskey warm We shared watching winter's storm Chorus... Don't shed tears when I'm gone, It's the nature of things we all have to move on If you really love someone you'll come to know There's always the day you have to let go 3. Like the breeze of summer cools your skin I can't promise that I'll come again 'Cause the red-winged blackbird's sung his song And I'm on the wing and I'll be gone 4. It's your simple beauty, I recall Like a walk in the gold and flames of fall When time is wide and memory thinned I'll take your heart dancing on the wind (Chorus) 5. When you find my picture in some old box Or hear my name when people talks I hope a smile will cross your lips And from your heart the sorrow strips (Chorus X 2)
